HELLO DOUGLAS ORCHARDS CUSTOMERS,

Thank you for all the kind words and support that we have received over the past few days. It is truly humbling to see our communities rally around us during these difficult times. This community support is part of what makes Vermont so special; we’re honored and inspired to be a part of it.

As you may already know, all COVID-19 cases originated and remain isolated in one of our labor houses. We are thankful that the men who have tested positive are feeling well. The entire staff was tested for a third a final time on Friday, 10/9, as part of an ongoing effort with the Vermont Department of Health to keep our staff, customers and communities safe.

WE ARE THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE NO NEW CASES AND THE OFFICIAL RE-OPENING OF THE ORCHARDS!

In an effort to help alleviate questions or concerns, here are a few statements about the most frequently asked questions we’re receiving:

  • Yes, it is safe to eat apples and other products that were grown or produced by Douglas Orchards. Here is a link to a CDC article about food and COVID-19. (Please always practice basic food safety and wash all produce that you purchase.)

  • If you’ve been apple picking the last couple weeks or visited our farm market, you are not at risk.

  • There is no known risk to the public.

  • Most of the 26 men who tested positive are asymptomatic, and voluntarily choosing to continue working on harvesting this year’s crop, while remaining strictly compliant with all guidelines.

  • One staff member is in the hospital recovering and feeling better.

  • We are working closely with several organizations to ensure that these men can receive proper medical care without fear of financial consequences.

  • No US staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.

  • Our bakery is closed at this time so energy can be diverted to preparing healthy meals for the staff in quarantine.

  • Our wholesale business is still supplying your local grocers, coops and farm stands with fresh sweet cider and apples. Purchasing our product from them is the best way to show your support and genuinely appreciated.

We will continue to work closely with the Vermont Department of Health to ensure we are doing everything possible to keep our team, customers, and communities safe. We appreciate your patience, understanding and continued support during this time!

Sincerely,

Bill Suhr and the Champlain/Douglas Orchards Team
